Usage
Wisis
is a device for non-destructive testing of wooden structural elements, poles
or standing trees. Wood material is often used for construction ; during use duration of a structure,
deterioration of a wood element may result from the application of excessive loads, the presence of mushrooms
or insects, and so on.
It is therefore important to periodically and by a non-destructive method evaluate
the mechanical state of the wood used in structure to detect and determine the extent of the deterioration,
so that degraded elements can be replaced or repaired to avoid ruin of the inspected structure. Wisis is a
diagnostic tool, under the responsibility of the operator, but not a prognosis tool.
Measuring principle
The detection method used is based upon the principle of changes in the
elastic wave propagation due to degradation of wood ("stress wave timer"). The main hypothesis is that the modulus of elasticity
is affected by degradation.
An elastic wave is induced in a material by striking tested sample with an impact hammer, with a strength sensor
that emits an input signal. An accelerometer, which is set on the other side of the sample records an output signal.
The simultaneous measurement of the input signal (excitation) and of the system's output signal (response) allows
the calculation of tested sample's characteristics such as the wave's speed and its attenuation.
Device composition
Commercialized Wisis device includes the following:
- an USB self-powered acquisition card PicoScope 3224 made by Pico Technology.
- an accelerometer.
- an impact hammer.
- a signal conditioner for accelerometer and impact hammer.
- required connection cables (BNC, USB).
- a rugged transportation suitcase (60 x 40 x 20 cm) to store device components.
- a licence of Wisis software.

To use Wisis you have to install the acquisition card's drivers. Here are the latest versions tested and recommended by CIRAD:

- Windows XP/Vista : Pico Technology Software release 5.20.1
